Evangelos
Masculine · “Greek "bringer of good news”
Evangelos and the English word gospel are the same thing said twice. Greek euangelion means good news; Old English translated it word for word as gōd-spel, good story, which wore down to gospel. One language borrowed the Greek, the other rebuilt it from native parts.

The story of Evangelos
Translating a compound word by rebuilding it from native parts is called a calque, and Old English did it constantly before Latin vocabulary took over: gōd-spel for euangelion, þrines for trinitas, and hālga gāst for spiritus sanctus. Gospel is the one that survived, and it is now so worn that no English speaker hears good and story inside it. Evangelos kept the Greek shape intact and remains one of the most common Greek men's names, particularly in Greece itself where the name day of the Annunciation, 25 March, is also the national holiday. The American figures peak in 1970 with Greek-American families.
Meaning
Greek "bringer of good news"
From eu, good or well, plus angelos, a messenger — the same word that gives angel. Euangelos is a messenger of good news, and euangelion, the message itself, became the Christian gospel. An angelos in ordinary Greek was simply a runner carrying a message; the supernatural sense came from its use to translate Hebrew mal'akh, which likewise just means messenger. The word is a job description in both languages.

eh-VAN-geh-los
Four syllables, stress on the second. Greek uses a hard g; English speakers often soften it to a j, which is not the Greek sound. The final -os is the Greek nominative ending, not a plural.

The Eleuterio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Evangelos's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Eleuterio climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Eleuterio's path sketches the road Evangelos is walking now.
Evangelos sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
