The story of Eudora
Hesiod lists Eudora among the Nereids, the fifty daughters of the sea, and the name appears in Greek use afterward without ever becoming common. It was taken up in English in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, when classical names were fashionable and American families in particular went looking beyond the obvious ones: Eudora, Theodosia, Zenobia and Lavinia all appear in the records of that period. It went quiet after the First World War and is only now being looked at again.
Meaning

The trade-off
- The meaning is two plain words and both are visible in English vocabulary.
- Dora works as a short form and is a complete name across Europe.
- It carries a nineteenth-century American record as well as a Greek one.
- It is rare enough now that it will be spelled out at every introduction.
- The eu opening is read two ways in English and Greek.
- It reads as distinctly nineteenth-century, which is charm to some families and age to others.
