Eriel
Feminine

Erin is Ireland in the wrong case. Éire is the nominative and Éirinn a dative form, and English borrowed the dative — so the poetic name for the country is grammatically of Ireland, a case ending frozen into a word.

Our story of Eriel
English has borrowed several words in the wrong grammatical case, and Erin is the tidiest example. Irish inflects nouns, and the phrase in Ireland uses the dative Éirinn; English speakers heard that form, took it as the name, and Erin entered English as a poetic word for the country in the eighteenth century. The nominative Éire is what the state uses officially. The same thing happened with the word alcohol, which is Arabic al-kuhl with the definite article attached, and with alligator, from Spanish el lagarto, the lizard — English took the article as part of the noun. Borrowing rarely preserves grammar, because the borrower cannot see it. Eriel peaks in America in 2014.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No documented meaning. Eriel is a modern American formation, probably built on Erin or Erica with the -el ending common in Ariel and Auriel. Erin is from Éirinn, an oblique case of Éire, Ireland, whose own derivation traces to a goddess name Ériu of unrecovered meaning. The -el ending is the Hebrew divine element used decoratively. Eriel has no established reading.

The Gwynneth test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eriel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gwynneth climbed just as high around 1931, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gwynneth's path sketches the road Eriel is walking now.
Eriel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
