Erich
Masculine · “sole ruler”
Erich is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 11,674 boys against 32 girls since 1880.
Erich is the German spelling of Eric, and its American peak in 1971 sits neatly beside two writers who made it visible: Erich Maria Remarque, whose All Quiet on the Western Front had been read by every American schoolchild for forty years, and Erich Segal, whose novel Love Story was the bestselling book in the country in 1970. Behind the spelling is an Old Norse compound about ruling.

The story of Erich
Eirikr was a common Norse name and traveled with the Vikings; Erik the Red and his son Leif are the best-known bearers. It became a royal name in Denmark, Norway and Sweden, and passed into German as Erich and into English as Eric, the latter helped in the nineteenth century by a schoolboy novel called Eric, or, Little by Little. The German spelling reached America with the nineteenth- and twentieth-century German migration, and its 1971 peak coincides with the highest visibility of two German and American writers who bore it. The ch at the end is a German digraph, said as a k in English and as a soft palatal sound in German.
Meaningscholars disagree
sole ruler, or eternal ruler
Old Norse Eirikr is made of two elements. The second, rikr, is certainly 'ruler' — the same element as in Frederick and Roderick. The first is disputed: ei may be the word for 'ever, always', giving 'eternal ruler', or a form of the word for 'one, alone', giving 'sole ruler'. Both readings are old and both appear in the standard references. The name has been borne by Danish and Swedish kings since the tenth century.

Two syllables, stress on the first. In English the ch is said as a k, exactly as in Eric. German says it as a soft palatal fricative, closer to the ch in the Scottish loch but lighter, which English speakers rarely attempt.

The Ivory test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Erich's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ivory climbed just as high around 1906, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ivory's path sketches the road Erich is walking now.
Erich sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
