Where it comes from

The story of Elyza

Elisheva is Aaron's wife in Exodus, and Elizabeth is the mother of John the Baptist in Luke — two anchors that put the name into both Jewish and Christian use permanently. English produced an extraordinary number of short forms from it, and Eliza became a complete name in its own right by the eighteenth century, helped along by pastoral poetry and later by the theater. The Elyza spelling belongs to the recent American habit of putting a y where an i would do.

Meaning

my God is an oath

Hebrew Elisheva joins El, 'God', to sheva, which carries both the sense of swearing an oath and the number seven — the two are bound together in Hebrew, since oaths were sworn by sevens. The name is usually given as 'my God is an oath' or 'my God is abundance'. The reading is documented. Eliza is the English trimming and Elyza a modern respelling of it.

Elyza sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2020, with 79 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Elyza went to 56 girls in 2025, but Eliza, Elisa and Elizah are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 3,154, which makes it the 93rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 2,864 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 510 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 28,701 for Elyza itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ellie, Liza and Lizzy are three ready short forms with different registers.
  • Elizabeth stands behind it as a full formal name whenever one is wanted.
  • Three syllables that every English speaker says correctly at first sight.
What to consider
  • Eliza is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected in writing for life.
  • Elyza, Eliza, Elissa and Elisa all circulate and are easily confused.
  • The y-respelling ties it closely to one moment in American naming.
