The story of Odelia
Saint Odile of Alsace, an eighth-century abbess, made the Germanic name common across the German-speaking world and France, and it reached America with nineteenth-century German emigration — which is where the American record for Odelia mostly sits. The Hebrew Odelia is a modern Israeli formation, built on the same pattern as Adaya and Hodaya, and it reaches the record more recently and from different families. The two roads share no history at all.

prosperity — in Germanic; or I will praise God — in Hebrew
The Germanic Odilia is built on od or aud, 'wealth, fortune, inherited property', and gives Ottilie and Odile as well. The Hebrew Odelia is odeh, 'I will thank or praise', with Yah, the divine name — a verb with a subject, like most Hebrew theophoric names. Both are documented on their own side and they are entirely unrelated; the spelling cannot say which a family means.

The trade-off
- Two documented ancestries, one Germanic and one Hebrew, both substantial.
- Odie and Delia are both natural short forms and Delia is a full name of its own.
- Four syllables give it real formality, with everyday forms underneath.
- Its meaning depends entirely on which of two unrelated traditions the family means.
- Odelia, Odilia, Odeliya and Odalys all circulate and belong to different roads.
- Four syllables is long for daily use and the name will usually be shortened.
