The story of Elodia
Nunilo and Alodia were sisters, the daughters of a Muslim father and a Christian mother in ninth-century Aragon, and they were put to death in 851 for refusing to renounce Christianity. They belong to a documented group known as the martyrs of Cordoba, and their cult spread through northern Spain, where churches and villages still carry the names. What is notable for a name history is the layer they come from: Visigothic. Spain's Germanic rulers left comparatively little in the language but a great deal in the name stock, and Alodia, Elvira, Rodrigo, Alfonso, Fernando and Gonzalo are all Gothic names that became thoroughly Spanish. Elodia reached the American records with Mexican families and peaked in the 1920s.

Gothic, from ala and od, wealth
Elodia is the Spanish form of Alodia, generally taken as a Visigothic name built from ala, all or other, and od, wealth or property. The derivation is not secure. The name is unrelated to Greek helodes, marshy, which is sometimes offered. The American peak is 1927.

Elodia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alyne climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alyne's path sketches the road Elodia is walking now.
