Where it comes from
From Hlodowig to Ellouise
The story of Ellouise
Hlodowig was the name of the first Christian king of the Franks, Latinized as Clovis, and it became the French royal name Louis, borne by eighteen kings. The feminine Louise entered English use in the seventeenth century. Ella came separately. American naming between 1890 and 1940 compounded almost anything, and the Ella- and Elle- compounds were among the most productive: Ellamae, Ellalou, Ellouise, Ellanora. The merged spelling was partly a family choice and partly the effect of forms that allowed only one given name.

Ella joined to Louise — 'famous warrior'
Louise is the French feminine of Louis, from Germanic Hlodowig — hlud, 'famous, loud', and wig, 'war' — which also gives Ludwig and Clovis. That half is settled. Ella is less certain: it may be a short form of Germanic names in ali or adal, or a Norman form of Alia, or an independent English formation. Both halves are Germanic in origin, and the compound adds nothing lexical.
