Leita is one of the short, vowel-heavy women's names that were common around the turn of the last century and are almost impossible to trace, because they were registered without the longer name they came from. The syllable at the front of it opens a Greek word with an unexpectedly concrete history.

Where it comes from

Our story of Leita

The Greek word that became liturgy meant something very specific before it meant anything religious: a public duty discharged at private expense. In Athens, a citizen rich enough to be assigned one paid to equip and command a warship for a year, or to train and costume a chorus for the drama festival, or to fund a delegation to a religious games. It was a tax collected in the form of obligations rather than money, and it was competitive — men boasted in court about how many they had performed, because the record counted in a dispute. The word is built from the pieces meaning people and work. It kept the sense of a service performed on everyone's behalf when the church took it over, which is how a word about paying for a battleship ended up describing a church service.

No source is documented. It may shorten Letitia, respell Lita or Leta, or have been built from the sound. Each parent has a different origin, and the record holds the short form alone, so no meaning can be assigned to it.

Leita sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1916, with 20 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Leita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two open syllables make it easy to say and easy for a small child to manage.
  • It is genuinely rare and belongs to almost nobody now living.
  • Both halves detach cleanly and work as short forms.
What to consider
  • Lita, Leeta and Leta are all in the record and will be written for it.
  • The ei can be read three ways in English, so the name gets mispronounced on sight.
  • No parent name is documented, so there is nothing to say about meaning.
