Eleonore
Feminine · “Contested”
Eleanor may mean the other one. Eleanor of Aquitaine's mother was Aenor, and the Occitan Aliénor is plausibly alia Aenor — the other Aenor — which would make one of the most consequential women of the Middle Ages named simply for not being her mother.

The story of Eleonore
Eleanor of Aquitaine inherited the largest duchy in France at fifteen, married the king of France, went with him on the Second Crusade, had the marriage annulled, married the future Henry II of England eight weeks later, bore him eight children including two kings, supported her sons' rebellion against him, was imprisoned for sixteen years, outlived him and governed England as regent in her seventies. Her name went to England with her and became one of the standard medieval English names. The etymology remains uncertain, which is a good reminder that a well-documented life does not guarantee a documented name. Eleonore peaks in America in 1887.

Contested — possibly Occitan "the other Aenor"
Aliénor is generally explained as alia Aenor, the other Aenor, distinguishing the daughter from her mother. The derivation is plausible and not proven, and an Arabic or Germanic origin has also been proposed. Eleanor is not from Helen, despite the resemblance; the two names are unrelated. Eleonore is the German and French spelling.
