The story of Elene
Georgian is a Kartvelian language, a family with no demonstrated relatives anywhere, spoken in the Caucasus for as long as records exist. Its alphabet is traditionally credited to King Parnavaz or to Mesrop Mashtots, the same figure credited with the Armenian script, and the oldest surviving inscriptions date to the fifth century; the script has gone through three forms and the modern Mkhedruli is used for everything. Georgia adopted Christianity around 337, among the earliest states to do so, and Greek and biblical names entered the language in Georgian forms — Elene, Nino, Giorgi, Mariami. The American figures for Elene peak in 1914.
Meaningnot established
Not established — a Greek name of unrecovered origin
Helen has no secure etymology; the readings usually given — torch, light, shining — rest on unproven connections, and the name may be pre-Greek. Elene is the Georgian form, and also a Greek and Italian spelling. Saint Nino, who converted Georgia in the fourth century, is traditionally linked to the empress Helena, which is one reason the name took hold there.
