The story of Eleazar
The name is Hebrew: El'azar, borne in the Torah by the son of Aaron who succeeded him as high priest, and later by several men in the books of Samuel, Chronicles and Maccabees. When Jewish scholars in Alexandria translated the Hebrew scriptures into Greek in the last centuries BCE, the name came across as Eleazar, and it is that Greek spelling English still uses. A clipped Greek form of the same name, Lazaros, became Lazarus in Latin and Lázaro in Spanish — so Eleazar and Lazarus are two branches of one root. In the US the name is carried strongly in Texas, California and Florida, where Spanish and English speakers share it comfortably.

Pronouncing Eleazar
el-ee-AY-zar
That is the usual English reading. Spanish speakers say eh-leh-ah-SAR, with the weight on the last syllable, and Hebrew puts it there too: el-ah-ZAR. All three are correct for the same name; families often pick one and gently correct the rest.

The Geronimo test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eleazar's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Geronimo climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Geronimo's path sketches the road Eleazar is walking now.
Eleazar sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way English and Spanish both expect it — no accents to drop, no letters to add or explain when writing it down.
- Comes with Eli already attached, a short form so familiar that it needs no introduction anywhere.
- An unbroken written record from the Hebrew Bible through Greek and Latin to the present, with Lazarus and Lazar as documented cousins.
- Rare enough in American classrooms that a child is very likely to be the only one, while the name itself is recognizable on sight.
- The stress moves between languages: el-ee-AY-zar in English, eh-leh-ah-SAR in Spanish, el-ah-ZAR in Hebrew. In a bilingual family that is an asset; in a mixed room it means repeating yourself.
- It sits close to Eliezer, Elazar, Eleanor and Lazaro, and will occasionally be written as one of those. Worth expecting on forms and roll calls.
- Four syllables is a lot for a first name, so it pairs best with a surname that doesn't stretch as long — though Eli solves this in daily life anyway.
