Eidan
Masculine
Eidan sits at a crossroads: it can be read as one more spelling of Irish Aidan, and it can be read as the modern Hebrew name Idan, carried into English with the vowel spelled out. Two syllables, a soft ending, and a sound already familiar to any American ear — yet the spelling belongs to almost no one, and it is climbing.

Eidan first appears in US birth records in 2003 — 22 years ago. The typical Eidan is a kid of about 5 — this name's wave is very recent. About 900 people named Eidan are estimated to be alive in the US today.

The story of Eidan
The Irish road is the older of the two. Aodh was an Old Irish name, and Aodhán its affectionate diminutive; the most famous bearer, Aidan of Lindisfarne, was the seventh-century Irish monk sent from Iona to Northumbria. Anglicized as Aidan, the name lay quiet for centuries before a late twentieth-century revival turned it into one of the most reworked sounds in American naming — Aiden, Ayden, Aden and, more recently, Eidan. The Hebrew road is short and modern: Idan, meaning "era," came into Israeli use in the twentieth century and travels to English-speaking countries with several spellings, Eidan among them.
Meaningscholars disagree
either "little fiery one" (Irish) or "era, epoch" (Hebrew), depending on which name the spelling represents
Two separate names meet at this spelling. Read as a form of Aidan, it goes back to Irish Aodhán, a diminutive of Aodh, meaning roughly "little fire" or "little fiery one." Read as a transliteration of Hebrew עידן (Idan), it means "era" or "epoch" — a name in ordinary use in Israel. Neither reading is wrong; families choose which road they are on, and the strongest states for Eidan are ones where both communities are large.

AY-dan
Most American readers will say AY-dan, rhyming with Aiden. Families using the Hebrew name often say ee-DAHN, with the stress at the end. Both are correct for this spelling, so it is worth deciding early which one the household uses.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Taven test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Eidan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Taven climbed just as high around 2007, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Taven's path sketches the road Eidan is walking now.

The trade-off
- The sound is already familiar to every American ear through Aidan and Aiden, so no one has to be taught how to say it once they have heard it.
- It works honestly in two traditions at once — Irish-descended and Hebrew — which is rare in a two-syllable name.
- Short, easy to say, and stress-flexible: it survives being called across a playground and being read aloud in a classroom.
- The spelling is uncommon enough that a child is very unlikely to share it with anyone at school.
- Expect it to be written as Aiden by default — on forms, in emails, on birthday cards. The correction is small but lifelong.
- The two pronunciations, AY-dan and ee-DAHN, both look right on paper. He will end up introducing himself with the version he wants, every time.
- Aidan and its many respellings have dominated one sound in American boys' naming for a generation, so Eidan blends into a crowd by ear even while standing alone on the page.
- This spelling's wave is very recent, which means it reads as of-this-moment rather than inherited — fine, as long as that is what you want it to say.
