Lucius
Masculine · Latin roots · “From Latin lux”
Lucius was one of the handful of first names a Roman citizen could be given — so common that inscriptions simply abbreviate it to a single letter, L. It has come down to English with its Latin spelling intact, two soft syllables that end in a hush, and with a whole family around it: Lucia, Lucian, Lucy, Lucio.

The story of Lucius
Lucius belonged to the small closed set of Roman praenomina, alongside Marcus, Gaius and Titus, and it ran through the Republic and the Empire in every rank of society. Early Christianity carried it forward: a Lucius of Cyrene appears among the teachers at Antioch in the Book of Acts, and three popes of the early and medieval church took the name. Renaissance and Reformation-era enthusiasm for classical names brought it into English use, and it settled firmly in the American South and West in the nineteenth century. It has been on the US record continuously ever since, never crowded, never gone.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it was spelled in Roman inscriptions — no variant spellings to compete with, and nothing to explain at the doctor's office.
- An unbroken record in US name statistics from the earliest years of the count onward, without ever becoming a crowd.
- Travels intact or near-intact into Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Polish.
- Sits in a wide, familiar family — Lucy, Lucia, Lucian, Lucas — so it sounds known even to people meeting it for the first time.
- Two pronunciations circulate, LOO-shus and LOO-see-us, and he will spend some of his life choosing between them for other people.
- The Harry Potter novels gave the name to Lucius Malfoy, a villain, and readers of a certain generation will make that connection first.
- The short forms lead toward Luce and Lu, both of which overlap with Lucy in English ears — worth knowing if you want a nickname that stands clearly apart.
- It is still strongly represented among older generations in the US, so it can read as an inherited or family name — a plus for some households, something to weigh in others.
