The story of Egypt
The Greeks named a great many places by mishearing or over-generalizing a local word, and Egypt is the largest example: a temple complex in one city gave its name to a civilization that had been calling itself something else for three thousand years. Kemet, the black land, described the only part of the country that mattered — the strip of dark irrigated soil along the river. As a given name Egypt is very recent and American, belonging with Cairo, Memphis and Israel among place-names used for children.
Meaning
house of the ka of Ptah
Greek Aigyptos is generally traced to Egyptian Hut-ka-Ptah, the name of the great temple of Ptah at Memphis — the house of the ka, or spirit, of the god. Greeks took the temple's name for the city and then for the country. Egypt's own name for itself was Kemet, 'the black land', for the dark silt the Nile laid down, as against Deshret, the red land of the desert.

The Sanchez test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Egypt's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sanchez climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sanchez's path sketches the road Egypt is walking now.
Egypt sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Said and spelled correctly by every English speaker on sight.
- A documented origin that is genuinely surprising — a temple's name for a whole country.
- Used for both sexes, with no strong pull either way.
- It is a country, and the place arrives before the person for everyone who hears it.
- The obvious trimming is a word most families would not want used.
- Place-names as first names date visibly to the period that made them fashionable.
