Egypt
Feminine · “the country Egypt”
Egypt is given to both — 4,726 girls and 820 boys since 1880. See Egypt as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Egypt comes into English through Greek — Aigyptos, the word the Odyssey uses for the land at the mouth of the Nile — and then through Latin Aegyptus. English speakers have sung it for generations in the spiritual "Go Down, Moses": way down in Egypt land. As a given name it is very new, but as a word it is one of the oldest in continuous use in any European language.

The story of Egypt
The name of the country traveled from Egyptian into Greek, then Latin, then Old French and English, arriving with its spelling essentially fixed. It appears hundreds of times in the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament, and through those texts and the spirituals built on them it became one of the most spoken-aloud place names in American English. Its use as a given name belongs to the American habit of naming children after places that mean something to a family, and the record shows it as a recent arrival rather than an inherited one — a wave that rose within living memory and is easing back a little now. It is most used in New York, Georgia and Texas.

the country Egypt, via Greek Aigyptos
The best-supported derivation of Greek Aigyptos is from Egyptian ḥwt-kꜣ-ptḥ, "house of the ka of Ptah," an old name for the city of Memphis; other routes have been argued and the question is not closed. Worth knowing: ancient Egyptians did not call their country this. Their own word was Kemet, "the black land," after the dark silt the Nile left behind.

The Yajaira test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Egypt's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Yajaira climbed just as high around 1996, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Yajaira's path sketches the road Egypt is walking now.
Egypt sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A spelling every English speaker already knows and can write on first hearing — rare for a name this uncommon.
- One fixed pronunciation, with no regional variants to correct.
- Recognizable in most European languages, which each have their own close form of the same word.
- A documented line running from ancient Egyptian through Greek and Latin into English, unbroken and traceable.
- It is a country, and people will ask why. Families with a real tie — ancestry, faith, travel, a story they want to keep — usually find the question easy; without one, it can get repetitive.
- Genuinely rare: a child with this name will almost certainly be the only one in the school, and will be the reference point for it rather than one of several.
- No established short form. Egypt is what people will call her, most of the time, which suits some families and not others.
- As a place name it is not strongly gendered, and it appears on both boys and girls in US records — worth knowing, though it is the girls' side that carries most of the use.
