Drea
Feminine · “Greek "manly”
Andrea is a man's name in Italy. Andrea Bocelli, Andrea del Sarto, Andrea Palladio — all men, because Italian inherited the Greek Andreas and the final -a is simply how that name ends. The same vowel that marks a woman in English marks nothing at all in Italian.

The story of Drea
The final -a is only a feminine marker in languages that inherited the Latin system, and it does not survive contact with names that came in by another route. Greek masculine names ending in -as gave Italian Andrea, Luca, Elia, Nicola and Mattia, all men's names, all ending in the letter English reads as female. The same collision runs the other way: Nikola is a man in Serbia and a woman in Britain. Andrea entered English use as a feminine in the seventeenth century, spread widely in America in the 1960s and 1970s, and generated the clip Drea, which peaks in 2005.
Meaning
Greek "manly, of a man"
From andreios, manly, from anēr, andros, a man. Italian Andrea is the direct descendant of Greek Andreas and is masculine; the feminine in Italian is Andreina. English, German and most other European languages treat Andrea as feminine because a final -a reads as a feminine ending in those languages. Drea is an American clip of the English feminine Andrea and carries the same meaning.

The Annalea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Drea's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Annalea climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Annalea's path sketches the road Drea is walking now.
Drea sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
