Our story of Dre
Clipping from the front is much rarer in English than clipping from the back. English shortens Robert to Rob, Elizabeth to Liz, Christopher to Chris — the beginning survives. Front-clipping gives Beth, Tony, Drew, Trish and Dre, and it tends to happen when the front of the name is unstressed, which is exactly the case with An-dré. Once the clipping exists it can be registered, and Dre appears in American birth records from the 1980s. What made it a name rather than a nickname was Andre Young, whose production work from N.W.A. through Death Row and Aftermath made him one of the most influential figures in American popular music. The birth records peak in 1993, the year after The Chronic.
Meaning
Manly, of a man
From Greek andreios, manly, from anēr, andros, a man, through Andreas and French André. The reading is settled for Andre. Dre is a clipping of it and carries the same meaning; the shortening itself adds nothing. Three letters is unusually short for an English name and the spelling gives no clue to the vowel.

DRAY
One syllable, rhyming with day. The e carries the vowel, which English spelling does not usually allow at the end of a one-syllable word; DREE is a common misreading.

The Alban test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dre's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Alban climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Alban's path sketches the road Dre is walking now.
Dre sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The vowel is regularly misread on first sight.
- It is tied closely to one musician and one decade.
- It reads as a nickname, and people will ask what it is short for.
