Donivan
Masculine · “dark brown”
In Irish surnames O means grandson and Mac means son, and the difference was real. A Mac name pointed at a father; an O name pointed further back, at a grandfather or a founding ancestor whose descendants had become a recognizable group. The distinction is one of the oldest things in the Irish record.

The story of Donivan
Irish hereditary surnames are the oldest in Europe, in use from the tenth century, and they were formed on a rule that outsiders often miss. Mac means son and attaches to a father's name in the ordinary way. O, properly ua, means grandson or descendant, and it attaches to an ancestor further back — usually the man a whole kindred agreed to trace itself to. That is why O names often correspond to recognizable groups with territory, and why the ancestor named in them frequently lived generations before the surname was fixed. Donndubhan was one such man; his descendants held land in Limerick and then, after a defeat, in west Cork.
Meaning
dark brown
From Irish O Donndubhain: donn, brown, with dubh, black, and a diminutive ending — two color words stacked, giving something like little dark-brown one. Both elements are ordinary Irish and both were used constantly in personal descriptions.

The Hodges test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Donivan's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hodges climbed just as high around 1952, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hodges's path sketches the road Donivan is walking now.

The trade-off
- A settled Irish meaning with both elements traceable to living words.
- Three syllables with a firm opening stress.
- Don and Van both work as short forms and both stand alone.
- Donovan is far commoner and the spelling will be given every time.
- The meaning is two color words stacked, which is either a good story or a strange one.
- The i changes nothing audible, so its cost is paid for appearance.
