Where it comes from

The story of Didier

Desiderius was a genuine late Roman and early medieval name, borne by a sixth-century bishop of Vienne and by the last king of the Lombards, whom Charlemagne deposed in 774. French reduced it through Desidier to Didier, and it became one of the standard French men's names, strongest in the south and east. Saint Didier of Langres and Saint Didier of Cahors kept it in the calendar. The name reached United States records with French-speaking families, including Haitian ones, and its best American year is 2009, which is much more recent than most French names in the record.

Meaning

desired, longed for

From Latin Desiderius, from desiderium, longing or desire, from desiderare. That verb is generally analyzed as de plus sidus, a star or constellation, giving an original sense of ceasing to look at the stars or missing what one had observed there. The related considerare, to consider, is built on the same root and means to study the stars closely.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Latin meaning with an unusually vivid etymology behind it.
  • A documented late Roman name with two saints and a Lombard king.
  • Marks a French or Francophone heritage clearly.
What to consider
  • English speakers will sound the final r, which French does not.
  • It is often read as the English word did on first sight.
  • Outside French-speaking communities it is entirely unfamiliar.
