Where it comes from

The story of Deziree

Roman public life took omens seriously, and a specialized vocabulary grew up around watching the sky. Considerare appears to mean to observe the stars attentively, and desiderare to await or long for what they have not yet given, perhaps originally to note their absence. Both words then moved indoors: consider became a word about thinking and desire a word about wanting, and neither carries any trace of augury for a modern speaker. This is the ordinary fate of technical vocabulary, and it is why etymology so often surprises. The name itself is French, used from the Middle Ages as Desiderata and Desire for a child particularly wished for, and it reached English-speaking countries in the nineteenth century. The z spelling is American and writes the sound the s already makes.

Meaning

Latin desiderare, to long for

Desiree is the French Desiree, meaning desired, from Latin desiderare, which is generally analyzed as de and sidus, a star. The related considerare, to examine the stars, gives consider. Deziree is an American respelling with a z; its peak is 1997.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Deziree went to 9 girls in 2025, but Desiree, Desire and Dezire and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 286, which makes it the 681st most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,426 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 5,620 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Deziree itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
