The story of Destin
Destinare in Latin means to fix something in place, and the sense of fate comes from that: a destiny is what has been fixed. English took destination from the same root, which is the fixed point you are headed for, and obstinate, which is standing fixed against something. French kept destin as the ordinary word for fate, and it turns up in every French poem and song about the subject. The town is much smaller and much more specific. A fisherman named Destin came south from New London, worked the pass between the gulf and the bay, and the settlement took his name; the fishing is still what it is known for. As a name it leans to boys and takes a real share of girls.

fate, destiny
French destin, fate, from Latin destinare, to make fast or fix — the same root as destination and obstinate. The Florida town is a separate source: it carries the surname of Leonard Destin, who settled there, and the surname's own origin is French. Both are live for the American name.

The Jowanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Destin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jowanna climbed just as high around 1959, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jowanna's path sketches the road Destin is walking now.
Destin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- Two syllables that everyone reads correctly on sight.
- Des works as a short form and serves either child.
- Destiny is much commoner and reads as feminine, so the two will be confused.
- The word means fate, which is a large thing to hand a person.
- The very few girls given this spelling will be read as boys on every form.
