As a given name it is Italian and Spanish, and its American peak is 1910.

Where it comes from

The story of Desiderio

Desiderius was a Late Latin name of the kind Christians favored for its hopeful sense, and it was borne by several saints, by the last king of the Lombards, and by an eleventh-century abbot of Monte Cassino who became Pope Victor III. Erasmus of Rotterdam took Desiderius as his own Latin name, translating his Dutch given name Gerrit into the same idea. Italian and Spanish kept it as Desiderio, and it remained an ordinary name in both countries and in Mexico. American records show it rising with Italian and Mexican migration in the early twentieth century and peaking in 1910.

Meaning

longing, desire

Latin desiderare is built on de and sidus, sideris, 'star, constellation' — the same root as sidereal. The most cited account makes it the language of augury: to desiderare was to cease to see a star, to look for a sign and find it absent, and from that absence comes longing. The related considerare, 'to examine the stars closely', supports the reading. Some etymologists treat the star connection as less certain than the tradition suggests, but the form is unambiguous and the sense of longing is settled.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The etymology is one of the most memorable in Latin and is easy to tell.
  • Desi and Des are both established short forms in two languages.
  • It has documented saints, a Lombard king and Erasmus behind it.
What to consider
  • Five syllables is long for everyday American use, so a short form is effectively required.
  • It will be misspelled by almost anyone writing it from dictation.
  • The French Didier and the Spanish Desiderio look unrelated to people who know only one.
