A derrick is named after a hangman. There was an executioner at Tyburn around 1600 called Derick, the gallows took his name, and when engineers built a frame with a hoist on it that looked like a gallows they called it the same thing. Every oil derrick descends from him.

Where it comes from

The story of Derrek

Theodoric is a large name with a small modern descendant. The Ostrogothic king of that name ruled Italy for thirty years, kept the Roman administration running, and built himself a mausoleum in Ravenna with a roof made from a single three-hundred-ton block of stone that is still standing. The name went into Dutch as Diederik, was clipped to Dirk and Derk, and came to England with Flemish weavers. The hangman is a separate and much smaller story, and one of the very few cases where an ordinary English technical word can be traced to a named individual with a job nobody wanted.

Meaning

ruler of the people

Derek is a shortened Theodoric, Germanic theud, people, with ric, ruler. It came into English from Dutch Diederik in the fifteenth century. Theodoric the Great, who ruled Italy from 493, carried the full name, and Dietrich is the German form.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Derrek went to 5 boys in 2025, but Derek and Dereck are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,592, which makes it the 226th most-given boys’ name of the year — 11,782 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 1,073 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Derrek itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning with both elements traceable.
  • A documented royal bearer whose tomb is still standing.
  • Three short forms, one of which is a full name in Dutch.
What to consider
  • Derek and Derrick are both commoner and this spelling will be corrected toward them.
  • It is strongly represented among people now in their thirties and forties.
  • Derrick is also an ordinary English noun, which the shorter spelling avoids and this one half does.
