Where it comes from

The story of Roderic

The Visigothic kingdom had ruled Spain for two centuries when Roderic took the throne in 710 amid a disputed succession. The following year an army crossed from North Africa, met him at a river in the south, and destroyed his forces; within a few years almost the whole peninsula was under Muslim rule. Roderic disappeared in the battle or shortly after, and the absence of a body produced centuries of legend: that he escaped and did penance, that he would return, that his fall was punishment for a personal crime. Spanish ballads, and later Southey and Walter Scott, worked the story hard. The name survived as Rodrigo, borne by the eleventh-century warlord known as El Cid, and its Latin form gives the English Roderick.

About 1 boy in 17,253 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 284,679 for Roderic itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
