Deric
Masculine · “Germanic "ruler of the people”
Derek is Theodoric worn down at the front, and one of its by-products is a piece of machinery. The word derrick, for a crane or an oil rig, comes from a hangman named Derick who worked at Tyburn around 1600 — the gallows took his name, and the crane took it from the gallows.

The story of Deric
Theodoric the Great, king of the Ostrogoths, ruled Italy from 493 to 526 and made the name prestigious across the Germanic world; every European language then wore it down in its own way, producing Dietrich in German, Thierry in French, Dirk and Diederik in Dutch, and Derek in English. The English word derrick has a narrower and better-documented history: a hangman at Tyburn named Derick was notorious enough by 1600 for the gallows to be called a derrick, and when hoisting frames came to resemble that shape the name transferred to them, then to oil rigs. Derek revived strongly in twentieth-century Britain and America; Deric, the single-r spelling, peaks in 1970.
Meaning
Germanic "ruler of the people"
From Theodoric, Old High German theud, people or nation, plus rik, ruler. Dutch and Low German reduced it to Diederik and Dirk, and Flemish traders carried the short form to England in the fifteenth century as Derrick and Derek. It is not related to Theodore, which is Greek and means gift of God — the similarity in English is an accident of two different theo- elements, one Germanic and one Greek.

About 1 boy in 3,830 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Deric itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
