The story of Denia
Spain's map is a record of two conquests. Roman names were passed through eight centuries of Arabic speech and came out changed but recognizable: Caesaraugusta became Saraqusta and then Zaragoza; Hispalis became Ishbiliya and then Sevilla; Emerita Augusta became Marida and then Merida; Dianium became Daniya and then Denia. The Arabic stage is doing real work in each case, reshaping vowels and losing endings, so the modern Spanish forms are not descended from the Latin directly but from the Latin as Arabic remembered it. That layer explains a great deal about Spanish place names that looks arbitrary otherwise, and Denia, a Roman temple of Diana turned into a Mediterranean resort town, is one of the cleanest examples of it.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Christella test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Denia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Christella climbed just as high around 1941, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Christella's path sketches the road Denia is walking now.
Denia sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
