Where it comes from

The story of Dena

Dinah appears in Genesis as the daughter of Jacob and Leah, and her story is one of the more troubling in the book; the name was nonetheless in steady Protestant use from the Reformation. Separately, Dean was a common English surname that American families used as a given name, and feminines were built on it. Dena appears in American registers in real numbers from the 1940s and peaked in the early 1960s.

Meaningscholars disagree

judged, vindicated

Read as a spelling of Dinah, the meaning is the Hebrew din, 'judgment' — 'she is judged' or 'vindicated'. Read as a feminine of Dean, it is the Old English denu, 'valley', or the ecclesiastical title from the Latin decanus, 'chief of ten'. The two are unrelated and both were in American use.

Dena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1969, with 1,264 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dena went to 30 girls in 2025, but Deena is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 56, which makes it the 904th most-given girls’ name of the year — 3,642 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 28,701 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 53,576 for Dena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two quite different traditions stand behind it, one Hebrew and one English.
  • Two clean syllables and no hard consonants at all.
  • Dee is available as a short form with an independent history.
What to consider
  • Two pronunciations of the first vowel are current.
  • The origin is genuinely split, so the name cannot promise a single meaning.
