Where it comes from

Our story of Demond

Ours, offered as ours. Desmond is one of the few personal names that is a compass direction and a province: Deas-Mhumhan means south Munster, and the FitzGerald earls of Desmond took their title from it before the name became a given one. Demond sits beside it with the American De- prefix. Two entirely different De- elements — an Irish word for south and an American prefix — meeting at the same six letters.

Not established

Desmond is documented: from Irish Deas-Mhumhan, south Munster, a region and then a family title. Whether Demond clips it or was assembled from De- and -mond is not recorded. The -mond ending also appears in Raymond and Edmund from Germanic mund, protection.
