Demetrios
Masculine · “Of Demeter”
Demetrios keeps the Greek ending that Demetrio and Dimitri drop, and the -os is not decoration: it is the nominative case ending, the form the name takes as the subject of a sentence. Greek-American families kept it deliberately.

The story of Demetrios
Demetrius of Thessalonica, a soldier-martyr of the early fourth century, became one of the great warrior saints of the Eastern church, and his basilica in Thessaloniki has been a pilgrimage site since. That carried the name through Greek, Russian, Serbian and Bulgarian use permanently. Greek immigration brought Demetrios to America from the late nineteenth century, and the -os spelling in particular marks a family that chose to keep the Greek form rather than anglicize; the peak in 1969 belongs to Greek-American families of the second and third generation.
Meaning
Of Demeter, devoted to Demeter
From Greek Dēmētrios, belonging to Demeter, the goddess of the grain and the harvest. The goddess's own name is usually read as earth mother, from mētēr, mother, with a first element connected to earth that is not securely established. The derivation of the personal name from the goddess is not in dispute; the -os is the Greek masculine nominative ending.

The Hansel test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Demetrios's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Hansel climbed just as high around 1905, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Hansel's path sketches the road Demetrios is walking now.
Demetrios sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
