The story of Daytona
The sand at Daytona Beach is unusually hard and unusually flat, and from about 1903 people raced cars on it. Land speed records were set there for thirty years, the beach course ran until the late 1950s, and the speedway that replaced it opened in 1959 with a race that has been the most important in American stock-car racing ever since. That is where almost every American who uses this name has met it — not the town, and certainly not Mathias Day. As a given name it is one of a small set taken from motor racing, and it is given to boys and girls alike.
Meaning
Day's town
From the Florida city, founded by and named for Mathias Day, with an invented ending in the style of Latin place names. It has no older source and no meaning beyond the surname. Day itself is an English occupational surname, from a word for a dairy servant, unrelated to the word for a day.

The Aracelia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daytona's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aracelia climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aracelia's path sketches the road Daytona is walking now.
Daytona sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Three syllables with a clear central stress that everyone reads correctly.
- It serves either child, and the records show both.
- The origin is documented down to the man and the year.
- It is a racetrack before it is anything else, and that association is fixed.
- It leans to boys without settling, so a form will guess and will sometimes be wrong.
- Place names of this size carry associations a family cannot choose or change.
