Davide
Masculine · “beloved”
Italian words do not end in a d, so Italian added a vowel. Davide exists because the language could not pronounce David as it stood, exactly as it turned Joseph into Giuseppe and Robert into Roberto: every borrowed name gets a vowel on the end whether it wants one or not.

The story of Davide
Italian inherited from Latin a strong preference for words ending in vowels, and it enforces that on everything it borrows: Davide, Giuseppe, Giacobbe, Abramo, Isacco. English, which is comfortable ending words in almost any consonant, takes the Hebrew names much closer to their original shapes, which is why the Italian forms look so much more altered than they are. David himself is one of the most-written-about figures in the Hebrew Bible and the ancestor of the messianic line, which is why every European language has a form of the name. Davide reached United States records with Italian migration and had its best year in 1968.

beloved
The traditional gloss for Hebrew David is beloved, from a root d-w-d. A competing derivation takes it from a Mari-period word meaning chieftain or commander, and that reading has serious support. The final e of the Italian form is not part of the Hebrew; it is Italian phonology, which does not permit most consonants at the end of a word.

The Vandy test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Davide's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Vandy climbed just as high around 1950, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Vandy's path sketches the road Davide is walking now.
Davide sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
