Davianna
Feminine
Nobody knows what David means. The usual gloss, beloved, rests on a root that may not be the right one, and an older suggestion connects it to a word for a military commander found in the archives of Mari. The most written-about king in the Hebrew Bible has a name that resists explanation.

The story of Davianna
The Mari letters, discovered in Syria in the 1930s, are an archive of some twenty thousand cuneiform tablets from a Semitic-speaking kingdom of the eighteenth century BC, and they contain a word that some scholars read as a title for a military leader and connect to the name David. The reading has been contested since it was proposed, and the current consensus is closer to unresolved than to accepted. Meanwhile the traditional Hebrew derivation from a root about love has its own difficulties, chiefly that the root's usual sense is a relative on the father's side rather than a beloved. What all of this means practically is that the name of the second king of Israel, which appears roughly a thousand times in the Hebrew Bible, cannot be translated with confidence. Names that big are often the ones that resist explanation.

Not established
David is traditionally derived from a Hebrew root dwd, associated with love, giving beloved. That derivation is not secure: the root is used of an uncle as well as a lover, and the name may not be built on it at all. A proposed connection to a term found in the eighteenth-century BC archives from Mari, possibly meaning a commander, has been argued and disputed for decades. Davianna joins the stem to the -anna ending and is an American formation. It peaks in 2006.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Aza test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Davianna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aza climbed just as high around 1926, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aza's path sketches the road Davianna is walking now.
Davianna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
