Our story of Darrien
Ours, offered as ours. The Darién scheme was Scotland's attempt to plant a colony on the Panamanian isthmus in 1698; it consumed perhaps a quarter of the country's liquid capital, killed most of the settlers, and contributed materially to Scotland's agreeing to union with England nine years later. Darren as a given name has nothing to do with it and no ancestry anyone has found. The isthmus is the more consequential of the two.

Not established
Darren's own origin is unsettled; it appears in American records from the 1950s with no clear ancestor and may be an Irish surname or an invention. The Panamanian Darién is a separate place name of indigenous origin. Neither is documented for this spelling.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
