Darielle
Feminine · “Old Persian Darayavaus”
In 1835 a British officer had himself lowered down a cliff face in western Iran to copy an inscription cut three hundred feet above the road. It was written three times, in three languages, by order of Darius the Great. That inscription is how the world learned to read Old Persian, and it is why we know what the name Darius means.

The story of Darielle
The Behistun inscription is the Rosetta Stone of cuneiform. Darius I had it carved around 520 BC on a limestone cliff in the Zagros mountains, recounting how he took the throne, in Old Persian, Elamite and Babylonian. Henry Rawlinson copied the Old Persian sections in the 1830s and 40s at considerable physical risk, and because the same text existed in three scripts, scholars could work outward from the one they could partly guess to the two they could not. That unlocked Akkadian and with it the literature of Mesopotamia, including the Epic of Gilgamesh. The king's own name is in the text repeatedly. So Darius is one of a small number of names whose meaning rests not on a lexicographer's reconstruction but on a document its bearer commissioned. The American Darielle peaks in 1997.
Meaning
Old Persian Darayavaus, holding firm the good
Darius is the Greek form of Old Persian Darayavaus, from daraya, to hold or possess, and vahu, good, so holding the good or holding firm to good. The name is known from the king's own inscriptions, which is unusually direct evidence. Darielle is an American feminine built on the Dari stem with the French diminutive ending -elle, and the compound is not attested in Persian or French. The first half carries the meaning; the second is decoration.

The Aracelia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Darielle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aracelia climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aracelia's path sketches the road Darielle is walking now.
Darielle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
