Daphnie
Feminine · “laurel”
Bernini carved the exact moment. Apollo's hand is on her waist, her feet are already roots, and the fingers of one raised hand have just become twigs with leaves on them. It is marble, it is life-size, and it has been in the same Roman villa since 1625, catching a woman a half-second into being a tree.

The story of Daphnie
Ovid tells it in about a hundred lines and it is not a romance. Apollo pursues her, she runs, and when she cannot outrun him she asks to be changed rather than caught, so her father the river god turns her into a laurel while Apollo is still reaching. Apollo then takes the tree as his own — its leaves for his crown, its wood for his lyre — which the poem presents without comment as a man consoling himself with the thing he was refused. The laurel crown for victors and later for poets descends directly from that. So does the English word laureate, and so does the tree in every Mediterranean kitchen.
Meaning
laurel, the bay tree
Greek daphne is the ordinary word for the bay laurel. The story attaches the word to a nymph who becomes the tree, but the word came first and is not derived from the name. The -ie ending on this spelling is an English pet-form ending and adds nothing to the sound.

The Nyeisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Daphnie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Nyeisha climbed just as high around 1993, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Nyeisha's path sketches the road Daphnie is walking now.
Daphnie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled Greek meaning naming a tree anyone can point at.
- Two syllables that everyone can say correctly on first sight.
- One of the best-documented stories in European art stands behind it.
- Daphne is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected toward it.
- The story it comes from is a pursuit the woman escapes only by ceasing to be one, which not everyone finds charming.
- Daphney and Daphnie both exist, so three spellings compete for one sound.
