The Book of Daniel gave the name a place in Jewish, Christian and Islamic tradition, and it has been in continuous use for two and a half thousand years. English-speaking Protestants took it up strongly at the Reformation. The feminine forms came later: Danielle is French and entered English use in the twentieth century, becoming very popular in America in the 1980s. But Dannie on girls predates all of that — the 1901 peak reflects the older practice of writing a father's name on a daughter in an affectionate short form, before the feminine derivative was widely available.
