Damia was a goddess, and two statues of her started a war. Herodotus tells the story: Epidaurus made images of Damia and Auxesia from Athenian olive wood, Aegina stole them, Athens sent men to take them back, the statues fell to their knees, and every Athenian but one was killed. The survivor was murdered at home by widows with their brooch pins.

Where it comes from

The story of Damia

The story is in the fifth book of Herodotus and it is one of his stranger passages. Epidaurus, suffering crop failure, was told by an oracle to make statues of Damia and Auxesia from cultivated olive wood; only Athens had such trees, and Athens granted the wood on condition of annual offerings. Aegina, breaking away from Epidaurus, carried the statues off and set up their own cult. The Athenians came for them, and Herodotus gives two versions of what happened: the Athenians say an earthquake and madness destroyed their force, the Aeginetans say they were defeated in battle. In both, one man returns to Athens, and the widows of the dead surround him and stab him with the pins of their cloaks, asking each in turn where her husband is. Athens, according to Herodotus, then changed the women's dress to a style with no pins.

Not established

Damia is the name of a goddess worshipped at Epidaurus, Aegina and Troezen alongside Auxesia, associated with fertility and growth; the derivation of the name is not established and may relate to a root about the earth or about subduing. In American records Damia is far more likely an American formation joining the Da- prefix to Mia. It peaks in 2005.

Damia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2005, with 70 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Damia went to 12 girls in 2025, but Damiyah, Damya and Damiya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 77, which makes it the 883rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,479 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 20,874 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Damia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
