The story of Dameion
Molokai's settlement at Kalaupapa was cut off by a two-thousand-foot cliff and reachable only by sea, and people sent there were not expected to come back. Damien de Veuster asked to go. He organized water supply, built a church and several hundred coffins, and wrote letters that got the place attention it had not had. He announced his own diagnosis to his congregation by beginning a sermon with we lepers. He was canonized in 2009 and is one of two people representing Hawaii in the United States Capitol. The spelling here is a separate matter: -eion adds a syllable in writing that most speakers do not add in speech.
Meaning
to tame, to subdue
Greek damazo, to tame, behind Damianos. Damien is the French form and the one the priest used. The -eion ending in this American spelling stretches the word by writing out a glide that the standard spelling leaves implied.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dameion's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aram climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aram's path sketches the road Dameion is walking now.
