The story of Damarius
Acts names two people converted after Paul's speech at the Areopagus, Dionysius the Areopagite and a woman called Damaris, and gives nothing else about either; her name is the whole of what survives of her. It entered English use through the Reformation, when Puritan families mined the New Testament for minor figures, and it has been a rare woman's name ever since. The American Damarius arrives by a completely different route, through the prefix families of the late twentieth century, and its best year is 2006. The two are homophones rather than relatives, and the sexes differ as well.

Not established
The New Testament Damaris is Greek and its derivation is disputed; readings from damalis, a heifer, and from a word meaning gentle are both offered without proof. The American Damarius is built from the Da- prefix and a Latin-looking -ius ending, and whether it descends from Damaris or merely resembles it cannot be settled. The prefix carries no meaning.

The Lennart test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Damarius's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lennart climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lennart's path sketches the road Damarius is walking now.
Damarius sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
