Where it comes from

Our story of Damar

The -mar ending had a very good twenty years. Lamar came first and had a genuine ancestry — a French surname, de la Mare, 'of the pool', carried into the American South by Huguenot families and made visible by Mirabeau Lamar, an early president of Texas. Once that sound was in circulation it detached from its history and became available: Jamar, Demar, Damar, Kamar and Lemar all appear in American records in the decades after 1970, built by fitting a fashionable prefix to a fashionable ending. Damar is one of those. What makes the group interesting is how tightly they cluster in time — none of them was in use before about 1968, all of them peaked before about 1995, and their rise and fall is almost identical. A naming element can be productive and short-lived at once, and this one was both.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No documented source for the American name. Damar is a real word in Malay and Indonesian, where it names a tree resin used for varnish, and it is a place name in Indonesia and Yemen — but neither has any traceable connection to American usage. The likelier account is structural: Da- is a productive American first element and -mar is a fashionable ending, found also in Lamar, Jamar and Demar. All four of those appear in the American record in the same two decades, which is the strongest evidence available.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, phonetic and unambiguous to any English reader.
  • The Da- front makes it immediately placeable within a recognizable family of names.
  • It has no close competitor in spelling, unlike most names of its generation.
What to consider
  • There is no documented meaning to give when asked.
  • Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling does not settle which.
  • Its curve is tightly 1975-1995, which places a bearer's generation.
