The dahlia is Mexican and it is named after a Swede who never saw one. The Aztecs grew it, ate the tubers and called it acocoxochitl; Spanish botanists sent it to Madrid in the 1780s, and it was named for Anders Dahl, a pupil of Linnaeus who had died the year before. The flower's own name did not survive the transfer.

Where it comes from

The story of Dalya

Botanical naming has systematically erased indigenous plant names, and the dahlia is a clean example. It was grown in the Valley of Mexico long before contact, used for food and for water piping from its hollow stems, and named in Nahuatl. Sent to Europe as a possible food crop, it failed at that and succeeded spectacularly as an ornamental, and by the 1830s Europe was in the middle of a dahlia mania with thousands of cultivars. The Linnaean system requires a Latin binomial and the convention of honoring a person had been established, so the plant became Dahlia, after a man with no connection to it. Mexico adopted it as the national flower in 1963. The same pattern applies to the poinsettia, named for an American ambassador, and to a great many others: the plant is from one place and the name from another.

Hebrew dalia, a branch or bough

Dalya is a modern Hebrew name from dalit or dalia, a branch or hanging bough, and is also read as a spelling of Dahlia, the flower named in 1791 for the Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. The two are unrelated. The flower is native to Mexico and Central America and was cultivated by the Aztecs. It peaks in the American data in 1997.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dalya went to 12 girls in 2025, but Dalia, Daliah and Daliyah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 450, which makes it the 552nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,810 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 3,572 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Dalya itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
