Dalia
Feminine
Dalia is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 14,291 girls against 6 boys since 1880.
Dalia is one of those spellings that several languages arrived at independently — Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish and Lithuanian all have a Dalia, and they did not borrow it from one another. Three open syllables, nothing to spell twice, and a shape that sits comfortably beside Amelia and Julia. In American records it has held on quietly through generation after generation, strongest in California, Texas and New York.

The story of Dalia
This is a name with several roads leading into it rather than one line of descent. The Hebrew Dalia belongs to a family of plant names that became widely used in modern Israel; the Arabic Dalia comes from the word for a grapevine and is long established across the Arabic-speaking world; the Spanish Dalia is the flower name, borrowed like Rosa and Violeta from the garden. Lithuanian keeps its own Dalia, from the vocabulary of share and fate. The name's American footprint — concentrated in California, Texas and New York — reflects that convergence, with families of quite different backgrounds landing on the same five letters.

Several established readings: 'branch' in Hebrew, 'grapevine' in Arabic, and the dahlia flower in Spanish
In Hebrew, Dalia is connected to dalit, a branch or bough of a tree. In Arabic, dāliya is a grapevine, the kind trained over a trellis. In Spanish, dalia is simply the word for the dahlia flower, which took its name from the eighteenth-century Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. Lithuanian has a separate Dalia, tied to dalis, 'share' or 'portion', and to the figure of fate in Lithuanian folk tradition. Which reading applies depends entirely on which family the name came through — and more than one can be true at once in a household.
Pronouncing Dalia
DAH-lee-ah
Spanish and Arabic speakers often compress it to DAHL-yah, and Hebrew usually does the same. Some English speakers reach for DAY-lee-ah by analogy with the flower spelled Dahlia, so expect to correct that occasionally.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dalia went to 340 girls in 2025, but Daliah, Daliyah and Dalya and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 5 spellings went to 450, which makes it the 552nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 247 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 3,572 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 4,727 for Dalia itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Juana test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dalia's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Juana climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Juana's path sketches the road Dalia is walking now.
Dalia is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Spelled the way it sounds in English, Spanish and several other languages — no silent letters and nothing to repeat over the phone.
- Genuinely at home in Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish and Lithuanian, which is useful for families that span more than one of them.
- Short enough to need no nickname, but yields Dali, Lia and Dee if one is wanted.
- Familiar in sound without being crowded — a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Dahlia, Delia and Dalila all sit close by, and people will sometimes write one of those instead. A quick 'Dalia, no h' handles it, but it will come up.
- The stress can land two ways — DAH-lee-ah or DAHL-yah — depending on who is speaking. Both are correct, so decide which one your family uses and be consistent early.
- Because the same spelling arrives through several unrelated languages, people may assume a background your family doesn't have. That is easy to answer, and it makes the name's story more interesting rather than less.
