Elowen
Feminine · “Elm tree”
Elowen is the Cornish word for an elm tree, carried out of a language that nearly fell silent and put back into use by the people who revived it. It has the shape of a word meant to be said slowly — three open syllables, no hard consonants anywhere in it. In American records it is a genuine newcomer, still young enough that most of its bearers are small children.

The story of Elowen
Cornish belongs to the same Brittonic family as Welsh and Breton, and it faded as an everyday community language in Cornwall by around 1800. From the early twentieth century a revival movement rebuilt it from manuscripts, plays and place names, and one visible result was a set of Cornish given names — Morwenna, Kerensa, Demelza, Jowan — coming back into use on birth certificates. Elowen belongs to that group: an ordinary Cornish noun taken up as a name, first in Cornwall and then more widely across Britain. Its arrival in the United States is recent, and the American wave is still cresting.

The Shyla test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elowen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Shyla climbed just as high around 2008, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Shyla's path sketches the road Elowen is walking now.

The trade-off
- A plain, documented meaning in a living revived language — an elm tree — with no competing theories to explain.
- Reads the way it is spelled for most English speakers: three familiar syllables, no silent letters.
- Comes with ready-made short forms, including Ellie, which needs no explanation anywhere.
- Belongs to a recognizable family of Cornish names — Morwenna, Kerensa, Demelza — so it has company and a traceable home.
- Elowyn and Ellowyn circulate alongside Elowen, so expect to spell it aloud fairly often and to see the other versions come back on forms and name tags.
- The name is climbing quickly. A child born now will likely meet more Elowens at eighteen than at five — worth knowing if rarity is part of what draws you.
- Ellie is the obvious short form, and it is already shared with Ella, Eleanor, Elena and Eloise. If that matters, the alternative shortenings are less worn.
- It is close enough to Eloise and Elwyn that people who half-hear it will sometimes reach for the wrong one.
