Where it comes from

The story of Dalvin

The prefix families of African American naming, La-, De-, Da-, Ja-, Ke- and Sha-, have been productive since the middle of the twentieth century, and they work in two different ways. Most often the prefix takes a free syllable, giving Deshawn, Jamarcus, Latoya. Less often it takes an entire established name, giving Dalvin from Alvin, Damarcus from Marcus and Deandre from Andre, and these are the ones where the older name stays visible under the new one. Dalvin belongs to the second group and reached its best year in United States records in 1993, at the height of the whole family's run.

Meaningscholars disagree

elf friend, with a modern prefix

Alvin descends from Old English Aelfwine, combining aelf, elf, with wine, friend, so the underlying sense is friend of the elves. Whether that meaning travels through the prefix is a real question: the Da- is a modern American naming element with no lexical content, and once a name is prefixed it is generally treated as a new word rather than as a modified old one.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, easy to spell and completely unambiguous in sound.
  • An established Old English name is visible inside it, which most prefix names cannot claim.
  • Dal and Vin are both usable and sound nothing alike.
What to consider
  • Delvin and Dalvin both circulate and are frequently confused.
  • The prefix families are closely dated to the 1970s through the 1990s.
  • Whether the Alvin meaning survives the prefix is genuinely arguable.
