Where it comes from

The story of Daizy

The flower name was in English long before it was anyone's name, and it became a girls' name in the nineteenth century with Rose, Violet, Lily and Iris in the great Victorian flower wave. Because the French call the ox-eye daisy marguerite, Daisy also functioned as a familiar form of Margaret, which is why Victorian Daisies are frequently Margarets on paper. Fitzgerald's Daisy Buchanan fixed the name's associations for American readers in 1925. The z spelling appears in the American records in the 2000s, when the flower names were reviving generally, and peaks in 2009.

Meaning

The day's eye

From Old English dæges ēage, the day's eye, describing the flower's habit of opening in the morning and closing at night. The reading is settled and is one of the most transparent etymologies in the English flower vocabulary. Daisy also served historically as a nickname for Margaret, because the French name for the flower is marguerite. The z of Daizy is an American respelling with no separate history.

Daizy sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2009, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Daizy went to 23 girls in 2025, but Daisy and Daysi are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 3,262, which makes it the 88th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,322 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 493 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Daizy itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled and among the most charming in English.
  • Everyone can say it on sight.
  • Margaret stands behind it historically as a formal option.
What to consider
  • Daisy is the standard spelling and will be written for it.
  • The z reads as a deliberate misspelling to anyone who knows the word.
  • Daisy Buchanan is a strong and not entirely flattering literary association.
