Daisey
Feminine · “the day's eye”
Daisy has the best etymology of any English flower name, and hardly anyone knows it. The Old English name was dæges eage — the day's eye — because the flower opens at dawn and closes at dusk. That is not a poetic embellishment; it is the literal origin of the word. Daisey is the nineteenth-century American spelling, peaking in 1880.

The story of Daisey
Flower names for girls arrived in a burst in the nineteenth century — Rose, Violet, Lily, Ivy, Daisy, Iris, Myrtle, Hazel — and Daisy was among the most successful. It has a second life as a nickname: Margaret gives Marguerite in French, marguerite is the French name of the flower, and so English-speaking Margarets have been called Daisy for two centuries. Henry James used the name in Daisy Miller in 1878 and Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby in 1925, both for young American women, which fixed a particular set of associations around it. The -ey spelling belongs to the nineteenth century, when American name orthography was much less standardized.
Meaning
the day's eye
Old English daeges eage, 'day's eye', describing the flower's habit of opening in the morning and closing at night; the phrase compressed into daisie and then daisy. The derivation is completely settled and is one of the clearest surviving examples of an English compound word wearing down into a single unit. In addition, Daisy has long been used as a nickname for Margaret, because the French for the flower is marguerite.
