Where it comes from

The story of Cydney

Tula Ellice Finklea danced with the Ballet Russe, went to Hollywood and became one of the great screen dancers of the 1940s and 1950s. The name she used was assembled: Charisse from her first husband, and Cyd from what her brother had called her since she was small, an attempt at sis that came out as Sid. She wrote it with a C, which is the detail that matters here, because it made an unusual spelling visible to a very large audience. American parents choosing Cydney rather than Sydney in the 1990s were following a spelling that one dancer invented for herself out of a toddler's mispronunciation, and that is a more traceable origin than most respellings have.

Old English sidan ieg, at the wide island

Cydney is a respelling of Sydney, from an English surname most likely meaning at the wide island or water-meadow. The C- spelling follows the model of Cyd Charisse, born in Texas in 1922, whose stage name came from a childhood nickname. The peak of this spelling is 1997.

Cydney sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 227 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Cydney went to 9 girls in 2025, but Sydney and Sidney are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 987, which makes it the 316th most-given girls’ name of the year — 9,791 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,628 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 178,585 for Cydney itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
