The story of Cosme
Pythagoras is credited with first calling the universe a kosmos, on the grounds that it is arranged; the word's other sense, adornment, survives in cosmetics, which are things arranged on a face. Saints Cosmas and Damian were third-century physicians who treated the poor without payment and were martyred together; they became patrons of doctors, surgeons and pharmacists, and their cult was enormous in the medieval Mediterranean. Spanish and Portuguese took the name as Cosme, and it reached United States records with Mexican and Portuguese families, with a best year of 1909.
Meaning
