From Quirinus to Corin
The story of Corin
Quirinus faded early. By the classical period Romans were already unsure who he was, and he survives mainly in the name of a hill and a handful of adjectives. The name persisted through several early martyrs called Quirinus, which is how it reached French as Corin. It then had a second and quite separate life in English literature: pastoral poetry needed shepherds and used a fixed cast of names for them, and Corin is one of them — Spenser uses it, and so does Shakespeare, who gives it to a real shepherd in a play full of people pretending to be shepherds. The name has been used for both girls and boys in American records from the start.
